The Memory of the Crachet Colliery

Nestled on the iconic site of the former Crachet Colliery, SPARKOH! (formerly PASS) pays tribute to its rich industrial heritage.
Located in the former coal processing building, this exhibition brings to life the mining history of the Borinage region and Wallonia.

More than the story of coal itself, the exhibition tells the story of the thousands of men and women whose lives revolved around the mines.

Gathered around a detailed scale model of the former Crachet Colliery, visitors embark on a journey through the world of the coal miners, known locally as the “black faces”.
Listen to the story of Marcel, a young boy who was both proud and terrified as he descended into the mine for the very first time at just 14 years old. Discover authentic objects and powerful symbols from this important period in Belgian history.

Learn how coal was formed millions of years ago and explore the techniques used to extract it in centuries past.

You’ll also enjoy a direct view of the historic headframe, one of the most iconic symbols of Belgium’s industrial heritage.
