Slag Heap, Heritage Trails and RAVeL

The Mont Ostène slag heap
Take on the challenge of climbing Mont Ostène! This former mining slag heap, a reminder of the region’s industrial past, is now recognised as a Site of Major Biological Interest and forms part of the Natura 2000 network.
Explore this unique ecosystem at your own pace, shaped first by mining activity and later reclaimed by nature.
At the summit, enjoy breathtaking views across the region—the perfect place for a family photo.
Access to the slag heap is free for everyone. Special educational activities are available for school groups.

Heritage Walking Trails
Did you know that every shaft, building and slag heap tells a story?
Discover the rich industrial and historical heritage of SPARKOH! through two self-guided walking trails.
- Heritage Trail (Red Signs) : follow the red markers around the entrance area and uncover fascinating stories about the former mining buildings: the lamp room, mine shafts, silos and underground tunnels.
- Landscape Trail (Green Signs) : want to explore the slag heap while learning more about local wildlife and habitats? Follow the green markers to discover nine spectacular viewpoints across the landscape.

RAVeL
Are you a cyclist or keen walker?
SPARKOH! proudly holds the “Bienvenue Vélo” (Cyclists Welcome) label. The site is crossed by the RAVeL 98C route, a former railway line that once connected the coal mines of Frameries and Hornu. Today, it has become a beautiful walking and cycling trail featuring outdoor artworks created in collaboration with the non-profit organisation Blanc Murmure.
So hop on your bike or lace up your walking shoes and enjoy a cultural, natural and refreshing outdoor adventure at SPARKOH!
